Lag BaOmer marks the end of a tragic plague among Rabbi Akiva’s students and the yahrzeit of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a great mystic who revealed deep spiritual teachings. Rabbi Shimon requested that his death be remembered as a day of joy, not mourning- which is why Lag BaOmer is celebrated with bonfires, music, dancing, and festive gatherings.
